Let me give you an example: the new Tessla. it's a high-end sports car--and is about the same price as other (gas-powered ) cars intended for that market. It outperforms any gas-powered production car ever built. It has a 200+ mile range--and the cost for a full charge is $4 (no, i did not leave out a zero--that is four dollars). We won't have universal electric cars for quite awhile--but midrange versions are already in the works. We have--NOW--the technology to double the average fuel efficiency of gasoline engines. That would cut your fuel cost, CO2 emissions, and our dependence on foreign oil, all in half. Besides the cost savings to you---these cars would cost no more on average than todays cars. No one will have to abandon cars. They will be phased in jsut as any new technology is--by replacing existing cars when they reach the end of their useful life and by capturing market growth. That is how capitalism acutally works. It's about innovation and developing new ideas to reduce costs and solve problems. It is NOT about whining because an obsolete technology like oil has seen its day and is due to be scrapped for better ideas. The same goes for energy across the board. There are advanced systems now--and more under development--that will gradually replace older technology for other uses. Solar, wind, and nuclear power--probably tidal and geothermal as well. Those alternatives are all available and working--today. Whether they get implemented and you get the benefits of lower costs an d a cleaner environment is up to you . You can continue fixating on oil and coal--or you can support real capitalism: new ideas and investment, entrepreneurs and progress. IF they are available–yes.
