Recycling furniture among family members
My inlaws got new living room chairs this month. Matching red chairs made of leather. They’re pretty comfortable, and definitely an improvement from the previous set.
The question now is, what to do with the old chairs? My sister took one of them and put a nice slipcover over it. It’s a great improvement. The chair is still good, and still comfortable, but with the cover over it the thing now doesn’t look quite so raggy. I suppose my inlaws could have done that, too, but they wanted something more upscale and with a little more support.
I like it when families can pass around furniture and do a few hand me downs once in a while. In the past I’ve had the use of my sister’s kirby vaccum, and also borrowed a dresser in the past. In those cases it was a benefit for both of us. She didn’t have to pay to store it and I didn’t have to buy a new appliance or piece of furniture until she needed them back. It gave me time to save up the money to buy my own.
Unfortunately you can’t do that with things like flooring, but you can, surprisingly, with windows. I didn’t know this, but a friend of mine said she took the windows out of someone’s house who was upgrading and was able to use them in one of her rental houses. Pretty cool trick. I wouldn’t use recycle windows in my house unless they were stained glass or something, but in a rental property maybe that would be ok.
